Ayn Rand was born in the Soviet Union where she lived until 1925, and left for America at the age of eight years old. Her father; a pharmacist, owned a pharmacy during difficult economic times as the communists nationalized business and demolished private wealth (Kelly) in the Soviet Union. Rand was in the pharmacy with her father one evening when the Soviets came in and took over her father's business. In the years before she left Rand lived through statism, as the soviets expanded their power creating a national dependency on the government thus giving the Soviets control of the people. Rand's life experience was applied to several of her novels depicting the importance of individualism, to include the capitalism system of economic freedom (Kelly), which is evidently clear in Atlas Shrugged - the importance of laissez-faire a separation of government and business.
